Yoga sessions incorporate a variety of styles from more flowing vinyasa sequences, to partner yoga, and yin yoga where postures are held for longer than usual and are designed to strengthen and lengthen joints and the deeper connective tissues of the body. In all lessons students are encouraged to use the breath to enhance each stretch and withdraw attention from our external world, so that the mind can relax and achieve a wonderful sense of calmness.

    Beginners Guide to Yoga

The practice of yoga has been around for thousands of years and originated from the East. Even though its roots are unclear, there is evidence of yoga postures on artefacts that are around five thousand years old.

There are many schools of yoga and a lot of guidance available on practicing yoga, but as a rule, modern yoga tends to focus on breathing, relaxation, positive thinking or meditation. Together these help to `join or yoke together` the body and mind, which is what the word yoga means.

One of the most popular types of yoga is hatha and this tends to be what most people will experience. It is usually gentle yoga and focuses on poses, postures or `asanas` and correct breathing. Iyengar yoga is also popular and similar to hatha yoga except that it uses aids such as straps and blocks. These help to minimise the risk of strain with some poses and can be better if you have musculoskeletal problems such as backache. Ashtanga is an intense style of yoga and can be difficult for beginners. It is better to practice this type of `power yoga` with some understanding of techniques. Other types of yoga can have a very strong spiritual base and involve much mediation and self-examination.

When beginning yoga, you should always seek guidance so that you receive maximum benefit from the practice. You need to breathe in a specific way and it can be difficult to practice this without help. The part of yoga that refers to breathing is called Pranayama.

Most yoga involves breathing though the nose and you should always `stomach breathe`. This means that you breathe in and out of the abdomen rather than the lungs. If you lie flat on your back and place your hand just below your rib cage you can get used to feeling the movement in that area instead of the rib cage. You breathe into most asanas (poses) and this allows you to stretch or flex your muscles that little bit further. It is also important to breathe properly during practice.

If you start classes then speak with your teacher before practice. If you have any underlying health issues they will be able to work with you to help you avoid any poses that may cause harm.

When you start yoga, you should always take time to relax, flat on your back for a few minutes before practice and concentrate on breathing. You should never be uncomfortable in a pose or suffer any pain and you should never hold your breath. If a pose is uncomfortable then gently break it. As at the start of practice, you should always finish by lying on your back again for a few minutes.

It is better to practice yoga bare foot as it does help with your balance, but you can keep socks on if you want. To begin yoga, standard equipment is a yoga mat and appropriate clothing such as Animal surf clothing. Leggings or bottoms must be loose or able to stretch easily. You should wear a comfortable tee shirt and for the ladies, the sports bra is necessary.
